So! I was hoping there would be a handful of people willing to embark on some summer writing with me. Instead, I got 50 people expressing early interest in the idea of a June, July, August writing... thing. I am hesitant to use the word 'challenge' because it has competitive undertones that might put some people off.
Writing 'thing' has a nice ring to it, don't you think? ;)
Also, look! I made a pretty banner:

I will put this on the check-in posts each week, and I kinda like the fact that Kaz's Summer Camp has the initials KSC. It's like, we're going one better than KFC... (Or maybe I just broke my brain with all the revisions I've been doing. Heh.)
Anyway, I will leave this post open until the end of the day Monday, June 7 after which it will explode. Well, it won't do that, but I've decided to close the comments after a week so we can have a steady group of the same people checking in each week. Cool?
So our first check-in will be next Tuesday, June 8th - obviously some people might have signed up a bit late so won't have done much by then, but that's okay. Mostly I want this to be fun and supportive and not too much like hard work for anyone... which is why I'm keeping it very flexible. (Apart from closing this signing up post one week from today.) There will also be some flexibility around time zones, given that some of us are in different ones. So please don't stress if you haven't checked in on a given Tuesday in future weeks. There are no penalties or any of those shenanigans.
If you want, you could share a snippet of your work when you check in - but you don't have to. And I'll have to think about what I mean by 'snippets' because we don't want hundreds of words blocking up the comments. LOL! Options include: just having ONE sentence that you really love. Or maybe two sentences. Something like that. Or the option to post your own teasers on your blog and invite people to take a look. (I'm still working this part out, but it's not a big deal. I quite like the idea of checking in with what you achieved in a given week and then just including your favourite line or two from a WiP, but only if you want to share it.)
Let's hear it, then! Goals, please: What tangible, reasonable writing goals do you hope to achieve between June 1st and August 31st, 2010?
As I said before, you can list as many or as few as you want. This isn't a competition; everyone has their own working pace and their own level of other commitments during the summer. We are here to support one another and to have a place to keep ourselves accountable on a weekly basis. That's all. Nothing more complicated than that. You are welcome to reply to anyone else's comments here at any time, though I expect you're more likely to do that during check-ins. In fact, you should feel free to do this. I actively encourage it, as it means I won't have to reply to 50 people every week. ;)
Please refer to yesterday's post for more information about how this idea came about, and the sorts of things you might like to aim for in your goals.
If you're all set, let's see what you got...
Remember to sign up with your goals by the end of the day Monday, June 7 at the latest.

excited

Comments
1) To rewrite DOL (Daughter of Lies) as an adult UF. Currently, it's a 60K YA urban fantasy. So I need to age the characters up & add about 30,000 words.
2) I would also like to make a start on TWQ (The Wood Queen), the sequel to TIW, which is under contract but not due until January 2011. I honestly don't know how much I want to write by the end of August, so I might sneak back in here later this week and edit this comment. ;)
1) To finish my YA urban fantasy novel, set under NYC. I started it ages ago with more of an adult concept in mind, but it has definitely swayed more to YA, so that's where I'm going with it.
2) To complete an outline for a new modern fantasy novel idea, which revolves around blues music and the Library of Congress folk music collections. The plot in my head is kind of tricky, and I don't think I can do this one without a starting structure.
My goal is to finish the rough draft of Thrice-Blessed, my YA witch-sisters book, currently at 44K. If I can add the last 40K by the end of July, I'll be very happy. Not sure yet what my August goal might be besides sending it to my betas.
a) to have a fairly decent draft of my latest wip (an untitled paranormal historical) complete at, let's say, 75K words. (I'm at 33K so far)
HOWEVER, if it turns out that my editor is "meh" about the above . . .
b) to get at least 30K written of alternate book (which, at the moment, is just a nebulous idea floating in my head).
1) I want to write up to and pass 50k words on the two novels I'm working on now. 50k is a nice round number, though if I go over (and I hope to) that would be cool too.
2) I want to start/finish/revise a short story and/or start a novella. Not sure which I want to do yet.
3) Oh, and write a big paper for one of my summer classes. But that's coming up later. :)
And I think that's it. This'll be fun!!
(I've been lurking on your blog, lately. You post some cool stuff.)
You can do this! I know it sounds like a lot, but there are 90 days (give or take) and we will encouarge you along the way.
2) Redraft chapter 1 of SoM
And if we're allowed to share not-quite writing goals (as one is code and the other lyrics)...
3) Streamline and redesign my website.
4) Get 3 songs written and recorded. One of the preferably from SoM.
2. To complete proposal of YA dystopian WIP.
To not delete the entirety of it in a fit of hysterical pique.
1) Finish Swan Song revisions
2) Write query letter and synopsis for Swan Song
3) Write a short story
4) Start next novel
I'd also like to get at least halfway done with my sequel, which isn't due until March, but I'd like to have it done in the fall. About 45-50K.
1. Finish WIP #1 by June 30th (approx. 25,000 words)
2. Let WIP #1 rest in pieces
3. Begin humorous YA horror in early July, write 25,000 words
4. Remove WIP #1 from coffin and finish second draft and third by August 31st.
Also, I will be hosting 'Writing Buddy Wednesdays' WBW (tm) on my blog. A place for anyone participating in Kaz's Summer Camp (KSC) to coagulate and encourage each other's goals throughout the day.
Also, please remember to place the (tm) symbol after KSC. Thank you. ;)
Your goals are most excellent. Do you really have a coffin?
1)Get to at least 35,000 words on my new YA fantasy(Thorns)currently at 6,761
2)Tinker with my query letter for SAH as needed, but keep sending out a few new queries every month.
My goal is to finish a draft of my YA mystery- ABOUT 80,000 WORDS. I currently have 16,000...
You can do eeet!!
- Have a finished first draft of the current WIP
- Write more (that's nice & vague, right?) of W&F2 (sequel to the book I'm about to query-- eep!)
- Be Ruthless (re: sekrit project)
Bonus June/Pro-Specific Goal:
Make Synopsis of W&F1 Super-Shiny & Query! :) This one's gonna happen no matter what, but still... it's a goal!
2) I will have a revised draft to my editor by its due date of August 16th.
Currently at 11k, I don't know how long it will be. 70k-90k probably.
1. Finish the new novel. If I finish, and this is a big if, start on another. See number 2.
2. Write at least 500 words every day, though I would like to challenge myself by aiming for 1000 everyday.
3. Challenge myself to complete at least one poem, one short story, and one essay, separate from my second goal.
4. Clean up all files and organise them nicely for transfer to new laptop. My writing files, and files in general, are an absolute mess.
5. Never give up.
Re. #5: absolutely!
Also, I love your icon.
1) revise the completed novel
2) finish drafting a paranormal romance novella (20K-ish words)
2.) Figure out a rough outline for an adult UF, that's been spooking in my head.
To do that: Let go of that book that's been sitting in revisions forever and write something FRESH AND NEW. Woot.
My goals include:
1. Finish my revision of GODDESSES. It's a 70K YA romance/fantasy. Need to just dive in deep and do it!
2. I'd also like to get back to writing the sequel to CROSSED OUT.
Good to see you here. Nice goals!
1. Finish drafting upper MG dystopian novel. (I'm 28K in right now.)
2. Revise said novel by end of July.
3. Research trip and outline for new book in August.
Okay, these are excellent. Lots to do, but you have a plan and you'll totally do it.
Where are you going on your research trip for #3?
Finish writing short story I started on and off three years ago.
Finish final revisions of manuscript
Type a little bit of new manuscript everyday
Finish "Dangerous lines" - currently at 68K headed for aprox 85K.
Rewrite and polish DL so I can pitch it at conference in October.
Thanks to Devon Monk for pointing me toward your Summer Camp.
Laurel N
Good luck with DL, you can do it!!
Also, I love this idea!!!
